Credo che per molti di coloro che vedranno per la prima volta, o rivedranno, il bellissimo film di Gus Van Sant Milk sarà difficile non entrare nella sua vita... Quella vita ha cambiato la storia, il suo coraggio ha cambiato molte vite.
In ogni occasione in cui mi è capitato di "entrare" nella storia di Harvey Milk mi sono sempre trovato di fronte a qualcosa che ci accomunava, se pur lontanamente. Ad esempio, era il 1977 quando Harvey Milk venne eletto nel Consiglio Comunale di San Francisco... era il 1977 quando avvenne il mio incontro con Ottavio Mai.
Quando aveva 40 anni Harvey Milk disse: "non sono ancora fiero di aver fatto qualcosa nella vita..."; a 40 anni Ottavio disse: "non mi basta quello che ho fatto nella vita...": ed allora incominciammo a girare i nostri "piccoli" film...
Il 1986 è l'anno in cui il bellissimo documentario di Rob Epstein, The Times of Harvey Milkvinse l'Oscar; ed è l'anno che celebrò l'inizio del nostro Torino GLBT Film Festival...
Milk aveva la dolcezza, la pazienza, la dignità di una persona ferita che non si ferma mai... anche Ottavio era così; e con il suo lavoro volle dire "Io ci sono".
A far la differenza tra ieri e oggi, è proprio la statura di Milk... e solo chi sarà animato da uno spirito simile, profondo e fecondo, non tradirà la sua lezione di vita.
Sono i grandi uomini e le grandi donne che possono cambiare la nostra storia, e Harvey Milk è stato un Grande Uomo.

I think that both for those who have already seen this great movie by Gus Van Sant and those who will do it for the first time, it will be hard not to come into Harvey Milk's life. That life changed history, and his courage changed many lives.
Every time I get in touch with his story, I cannot but realize that there is something we have in common, although only remotely. It was 1977, when Harvey Milk was elected to the Board of Supervisors in San Francisco. In the same year I met Ottavio Mai for the first time.
When he was fourty, Milk said: "I am still not happy with what I've done in my life". The same thing said Ottavio, and so we started shooting our "little" movies.
It was in 1986 that The Times of Harvey Milk – the beautiful documentary by Rob Epstein was awarded with an Oscar. At the same time our Torino GLBT Film Festival moved its first steps.
Milk had the dignity and the patience of a hurt person who never gives up. Like Ottavio, who wanted to say "I exist" with his work.
The difference between past and present lies right in Milk's moral stature. Only those who have a similar deep and prolific soul won't betray his lesson.
Great men and women can change our history, and Harvey Milk was among them.
